New Year’s Workout Goals
Here’s How to Create and Achieve Your Workout Goals
Beach bodies aren’t born—they’re made. There’s a process behind shaping your body, and it begins before you ever put on a swimsuit.
Creating exercise goals is the first step. They aren’t going to be the same for everyone. What do you want out of your workout? More definition? More strength? Endurance? These are all great generalizations, but it pays to get specific. Do you want to run a mile in eight minutes? That is a tangible, measurable goal that gives you something concrete to work toward.
A specific goal also means that you can set steps for yourself. Start with something you know you can handle and work yourself up from there. You might even surprise yourself if you set the bar too low and raise it later. Go to the gym and start with the lighter weights, then try something heavier. Build yourself up, increasing in weight and reps every week. As you feel the clench and release of your muscles working and your heartbeat in your ears, do the extra repetition. Run for another minute. Hold the stretch just a few seconds more and breathe. Take pride in your sweat. It’s a sign that you are putting in the work.
Now you have a goal and you have a plan, stick to it. This Forbes article states that the 21 days to build a habit is a myth. In reality, you have to push through several cycles where you lose your drive and regain it until a habit truly settles in. To break through those times of struggle, find ways to motivate yourself:
- Get a friend to do it with you, or remind you.
- Make it fun by listening to your favorite music or podcasts.
- Catch up with that Netflix show you’ve been meaning to watch while you’re on the treadmill.
Try not to look at your workout as a trial, but an opportunity to physically work out stress and be present with your body. Exercise should not be punishment. It should be rewarding to put in the effort and see the results in the milestones you set for yourself.
